Crafting for Improved Wellbeing: Courses

Aim: To help to improve individual wellbeing through crafting.

Approach: 10 sessions per quarter provided over 1 year to develop skills in crafting and improved self-confidence and skills that are transferable to other settings such as the home and workplace.

Experience tells us that participation in these activities consistently over time is helpful, with 1 - 2 year participation followed by ongoing membership of Craft4Smiles providing the optimum benefit. However, by discussion, we will consider offering courses for 6 - 9 months.

Our groups offer the opportunity for the development of sustained and supportive relationships between participants and between participants and the tutor. As well as participating in crafting activities, participants can gain additional experience, skills and confidence by volunteering to help with running Craft4Smiles, for example by supporting crafting activities and events or helping to produce the newsletter and/or by participating in the Board. They can also work towards becoming paid craft tutors in their own right, working towards this by becoming proficient in the crafts we teach and by developing sufficient skills in group work and core work skills to work safely and effectively. We offer support to access the training they need to achieve this. Participants in the groups are also encouraged to sell products made during craft group sessions or at home through the Craft4Smiles online shop and at craft fairs. In the longer term, they may go on to set up their own businesses for which will provide ongoing support through their membership of Craft4Smiles C.I.C.

Activities offered over the first 10-20 weeks include:

  1. Construction: bird houses

  2. Construction: box making, dusting and stamping

  3. Glitter by stencil

  4. Quilling

  5. Paper flowers

  6. Modelling with air dry clay

  7. Card making

  8. Little books

Many more crafting activities and materials will be introduced after the initial period. This includes introducing mixed media approaches and encouraging the design of original items that are unique to each person.

Cost: 40 sessions per year: 10 x 2 hour session for 6 - 12 people per quarter per year

  • 6 people per session: 10 x £165.00 per session x 40 = £6,600 per year

  • 12 people per session: 12 x £ 85.50  per session x 40 = £7,420 per year

Includes tutor preparation time and travel to the venue, an assistant tutor to support the activity and materials @ £3.25 per head (fixed cost unless agreement to a lower number of people e.g. 5 - 9 at commencement of the course. Numbers can be increased to 10 by agreement during the course). Costing assumes provision of space by the client at no cost. Room hire can be added to the charges if necessary.

Prices would be reduced pro-rata for a 6 or 9 month course.

Crafting for Improved Wellbeing: Courses - From Beginner to Advanced Crafter

In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, we have adapted our approach and are able to deliver our original face-to-face course online. There are unavoidable additional costs associated with this as each participant needs to have the equipment that we would normally bring to a session for themselves. This will be posted in advance of  weeks 1 and 4 and will become the property of the participant.  If the organization commissioning the course so wishes, it would be possible to arrange for participants to return the tools at the end of any of the 10 week courses. If these are returned to Craft4Smiles as a full set in good condition, £118 per person will be refunded. However, we hope that most people will enjoy the course and decide to continue with us and/or continue to use the basic skills that they have acquired. In this case, we would suggest that individuals retain the tools.  The commissioning organisation may ask for a contribution towards the cost as appropriate.
